Nutrition Myths.....Busted
1. Sugar Causes DiabetesMyth! When sugar is consumed the hormone insulin is required to bring blood sugar levels back down to normal. Diabetes is caused through a lack of insulin, not an excess of sugar in the diet. Once someone has diabetes it is important to manage the frequency and amount of eating and the types of carbohydrate, including sugar, consumed to allow the body to maintain good blood sugar control. 2. All Fats are badMyth! It's a nutrition myth that all fats are bad as we
all need fat. Fats aid nutrient absorption and nerve transmission, and they help
to maintain cell membrane integrity. However, when consumed in excessive
amounts, fats contribute to weight gain, heart disease and certain types of
cancers. 3. Brown Sugar is better than White SugarMyth! The brown sugar sold at the supermarket is actually white granulated sugar with added molasses so the difference between brown sugar and white sugar is insignificant. The idea that brown and white sugar have big differences is another common myth. 4. Avoid seafood to lower blood cholesterolMyth! The dietary cholesterol found in seafood and other meats has little effect on blood cholesterol in most people. Saturated fats and trans fatty acids are the most important factors that raise blood cholesterol. 5. Eating eggs will raise your cholesterolMyth! This myth began because egg yolks have the most concentrated amount of cholesterol of any food. However, there’s not enough cholesterol there to pose health risks if eggs are eaten in moderation. Studies suggest that eating one egg per day will not raise cholesterol levels and that eggs are actually a great source of nutrients. Nutrition Myths Continued >Further Nutrition Reading:
